El Salvador Project 2023

What did we do?

Our efforts took us to two communities in Ahuachapán: Chucutitan and Apaneca.

Elementary Schools (3rd & 4th Grade):

  • Taught English, karate, and dance to over 80 students.

  • Culminated in a final presentation where children showcased their skills to parents.

High School Students (Sophomores):

  • Introduced Japanese culture through ramen cooking, calligraphy, and writing their names in Japanese.

Community Engagement (Hope House, El Zonte):

  • On weekends and Fridays, we taught English, dance, and karate.

  • Children taught us surfing, creating a fun and enriching cultural exchange.

Highlights of Our 2023 Visit

  • Intensive programs: Two weeks of hands-on lessons and skill-building activities.

  • Parent & teacher presentations: Students demonstrated their progress in karate, dance, and English.

  • Field research: One-on-one interviews helped us understand local needs and challenges.

  • Key insights: Early pregnancies among girls under 14, poor school sanitation, and poverty limit education.

  • Our commitment: Inspired by the children’s energy and potential, we continue year-round support from Japan, creating lesson plans and videos to maximise impact.

What Did We Learn?

  • Teacher challenges: Many teachers have limited proficiency levels, affecting educational outcomes.

  • Limited internet access: Connectivity issues restrict access to learning resources.

  • Sexual education barriers: Cultural and religious factors make sexual education difficult to implement.

  • Career aspirations: Children are motivated to pursue proper careers despite obstacles.

  • Emotional struggles: Many children face sadness due to domestic violence, trauma, or financial hardships.

  • Inspiration from role models: Young achievers serve as motivating examples for the youth.

  • Sanitation & sustainability: School bathrooms are subpar, and awareness of waste separation is low.

  • Knowledge gaps: Children have a limited understanding of Bitcoin and other youth resources.

  • Teenage pregnancies: Early pregnancies are linked to family sexual assault and lack of support.
